Starlim is a world leader in Liquid Silicone Moulding serving a host of industries. Since 1974, through the dedication and success of their employees, Starlim has developed world-class technologies and high quality products.
With the completion of their new production facility in 1997 and the rapid increase in demand for their products, Starlim looked to North America for their second manufacturing facility.
McKay-Cocker was called upon to provide design and construction management services. In order to gain a full appreciation of the owner requirements and processes several trips to the new Austrian facility in Marchtrenk were undertaken to deliver the Canadian version to a fourteen acre site in the south-east of the City of London.
The building, with expansion capacities up to three times its current size, is laid out over three floors. On the ground floor, the facility houses eight and a half thousand square feet of corporate office and thirty one thousand square feet of production and warehousing.
The production facility has a full basement which houses electrical and control rooms, along with mechanical process equipment and raw material storage and distribution.A sub-basement consists of two reservoirs to house the process cooling water which is a constant volume of eight hundred thousand litres.
The exterior of the building is clad in a combination of EIFS and horizontal & vertical metal claddings and profiles. Natural light is introduced all around the building with high level windows and curtain wall panelling.
All the mechanical and electrical work on the project was undertaken on a design-build basis and complex plant heating and cooling systems integrate both the building and process-related systems for utility cost efficiencies.
This facility has set a new standard for quality and process design with the main production area housing precision silicon rubber parts production in a ‘clean’ environment.
